Oral hygiene treatment is an important part of routine care for healthy gums, preventing gum disease. Dental cleanings remove buildup and perform a more in-depth teeth cleaning than what you can do at home with a toothbrush and floss.
Why is Dental Cleaning and Periodontal Care So Important?
Everyday brushing, flossing, and other steps in home dental care are great ways to improve basic hygiene and protect your teeth from damage, but they don't catch everything. Over time, buildup occurs that can make teeth look discolored and allow gingivitis bacteria to flourish.During regular dental cleanings, Dr. Krothapalli, or one of our expert hygienists remove the plaque and calculus that builds up on teeth over time. We also clean below the gum line to prevent and treat gum disease or gingivitis.
Even if your teeth are completely healthy, routine dental cleanings should be performed regularly to avoid problems like:
Cavities and decay
Bleeding or receding gums
Periodontal gum disease
Gingivitis
Gum surgery to repair these problems at advanced stages of gum disease
How Does a Hygiene Appointment Work?
Oral hygiene is usually completely painless, but if you're anxious about the appointment, we can use laughing gas or a mild sedative to help you relax. One of our trained hygienists will gently scrape tartar and calculus off of each tooth, improving the health of your teeth and gums.
The entire process can take anywhere from half an hour to a little over an hour, after which Dr. Krothapalli may examine your teeth and gums to ensure that everything is in good shape. Dental hygiene appointments should be scheduled at least twice a year (every six months) for optimal cleaning.
Hygiene Benefits
Appearance of teeth:Dental cleaning removes the superficial stains and dirt that accumulate on your teeth, leaving them sparkling and white.
Cleanliness:Your teeth will feel more polished, smoother, and cleaner after a dental hygiene appointment. You'll also have the peace of mind of knowing that you're doing everything you can to keep your teeth healthy and strong for the rest of your life.
Gum health:By dislodging bacteria that grow along the gum line, professional cleaning protects the health of your gums as much as your teeth. Regular hygiene appointments are your best defense against gum disease and gingivitis.
